COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Disability Resource Center of New River Valley has relocated to Fairlawn to expand support for residents with disabilities, offering services such as home modifications and peer support programs (serving about 180 clients this year). The nonprofit is hosting an open house today (starting at 9 a.m. at 7368 Peppers Ferry Blvd) to introduce its new services.  WSLS 10
  • The All Vets Ruck event will return for Memorial Day Weekend and will bring local veterans together for organized activities and community support—an opportunity for connection ahead of the holiday.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech's Center for Communicating Science provides workshops to help researchers explain their work in clear, personal language + the sessions build skills for connecting with the public through engaging stories.  Virginia Tech News
  • Dean Mario Ferruzzi has met with students, farmers, legislators and Extension agents since his October appointment to focus on community — ecological health priorities such as land and water use and workforce development. He toured six research centers and attended legislative sessions in Richmond and Washington, D.C. — efforts that will guide his plans for the next budget cycle and forge new private partnerships.  Virginia Tech News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, VDOT seeks input on a study along Prices Fork Road to review road safety, pedestrian access, and traffic operations in Blacksburg and Montgomery County—residents can complete an online survey until June 2 to help shape recommendations for multimodal improvements in a project expected to complete in summer.  News Messenger

HEALTH NEWS

  • Amy Amos has enrolled her 9-year-old bullmastiff with bone cancer in a clinical trial at Virginia Tech—Blacksburg that uses sound waves and immunotherapy to ease pain without aggressive surgery. The dog felt better after treatment and will be watched with follow-up tests to see if this plan can help other dogs with cancer.  Virginia Tech News
  • Officials announced the Operation H.E.R.: Strong Minds, Strong Girls Mental Health Summit to provide new resources and expert insight on supporting girls' mental wellness—aiming to offer community members a focused discussion on mental health. The event details were shared on May 20 and will soon offer a platform for expert speakers and supportive strategies.  WDBJ7
  • Virginia Tech researchers at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute found that as hearts age, a tiny gap between cells (the perinexus) narrows naturally and may help keep heartbeats steady. They studied guinea pig hearts and showed that artificially widening this gap in older hearts led to irregular rhythms.  Virginia Tech News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia Tech head coach Mike Young announced the addition of seven-foot center Antonio Dorn, who averaged 9.5 points and 4.6 rebounds in Germany, and guard Jailen Bedford from UNLV to the 2025-26 roster, with both expected to strengthen the team's defense in Blacksburg + Radford University also added former Clemson guard Del Jones to boost its lineup.  News Messenger
