COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 31, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library will host a free Fun Fair at Slusser’s Chapel in Blacksburg from 11-3 to raise funds for its monthly free book deliveries for children under age five, featuring a raffle for an autographed copy of Coat of Many Colors & activities like a plant sale, crafts, and food trucks.  New River Valley News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The College of Engineering dean’s office announced that 17 faculty and staff from 9 departments took part in the second cohort of the Dean’s Fellows program, which gave a clear view of how to build large-scale research centers with strong transdisciplinary ties. The group focuses on boosting research capacity, expanding revenue streams, and forging new partnerships in Blacksburg — steps that will shape future collaborative projects.  Virginia Tech News
  • Virginia Tech researchers have received a $1 million grant from the Educating Character Initiative to launch a three-year program that develops compassionate STEM education for students. Faculty from Virginia Tech and Colorado School of Mines will lead online workshops and integrate new course designs—aiming to blend technical skills with character building for a more supportive learning environment.  Virginia Tech News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Virginia Department of Transportation is asking Blacksburg residents and travelers for feedback on a study that looks at roadway and pedestrian safety improvements along Prices Fork Road (Routes 412/685) between McCoy Road and North Main Street in Blacksburg and Montgomery County. The online survey (available in multiple languages) is open until June 2, and the study is part of the Project Pipeline program that will be complete in summer 2026.  New River Valley News
  • A public hearing will be held June 16th at 1:30 p.m. at the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority at 555 Authority Drive in Christiansburg to review proposed rates, fees and charges for solid waste disposal and recycling services—these fees cover items such as clean brush, construction waste and dead animals—and all interested persons may speak at the meeting.  News Messenger

HEALTH NEWS

  • Virginia Tech alum Greg Echols switched from long hours as an associate veterinarian to relief work—he now fills positions at 15 clinics in the Carolinas to balance surgeries, gym time, and travel plans. He also started a program to help veterinary professionals with exam costs and support—his career change comes after a time of burnout during the pandemic.  Virginia Tech News
  • United Way launched its 100 Heroes Project for Health Care—designed to recognize local health care workers for their contributions. The project, announced on May 19, will honor professionals who provide vital services to our community.  WDBJ7
  • Virginia Tech’s Melissa Wright offered four key food safety tips for summer—cleaning hands and surfaces, separating raw and ready-to-eat items, cooking foods to safe temperatures, and avoiding the danger zone (40°F to 140°F)—to help prevent food poisoning at outdoor events. Her advice is aimed at keeping local residents safe during grill-outs and family gatherings.  WSLS 10
  • On May 19, Gov. Glenn Youngkin presented the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Emergency Medical Services Agency to Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad—recognizing their strong commitment to patient care and community service.  WDBJ7
