COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new program in Blacksburg helps veterans express themselves through creative outlets (art and music workshops) while connecting them with local opportunities. Launched on May 14, the initiative provides a space for service members to share their experiences.  WDBJ7
  • A local high school student is working to boost road safety for farmers by suggesting more visible signs and designated crossing areas, and plans to partner with community groups to bring these changes online soon.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Photographers are encouraged to submit their work for an upcoming exhibition showcasing local art in Blacksburg; the submission call was announced yesterday and details on the exhibit’s date and venue will be shared soon.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fifteen students from the New River Valley were honored at New River Community College’s President’s Awards Ceremony on May 14 — each fulfilled requirements to graduate this spring or summer and has been featured on the college’s social media.  New River Valley News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Least of These Ministry discussed a local zoning violations decision on May 14 during a community meeting, inviting residents to share input on next steps and clarifying the issue's impact.  WDBJ7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Christiansburg EMS hosted a blood drive on May 14 that offered a $30 gift card per donor, a $10 bonus to EMS, and an extra $80 for donors with O positive or O negative blood (Simple Fixins food truck served treats from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.).  New River Valley News
  • Radford University unveiled its mobile health clinic (based on campus) to offer screenings and basic care for local residents. The new clinic began operations yesterday and is set to improve access to health services in the area.  WDBJ7
  • Confusion over updated breast cancer screening guidelines may lead to delays in detecting cancer, and local health providers report that unclear communications have left patients unsure about when to get screened. Health officials are reviewing procedures to help prevent setbacks.  WDBJ7
