COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Barks n' Rec Fundraiser returns to raise money for service dogs as organizers plan to support new training programs—locals can expect family-friendly activities and community engagement during the event. The fundraiser aims to boost resources for service dogs and invites residents to contribute to its success.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Strand Theatre held a revival event on May 13 to showcase its historic style—local organizers said the program aimed to revive classic performances for the community.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Louhan Dembele, the top graduating public health student from Blacksburg at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, earned the Phi Kappa Phi Medallion and will attend UNC Chapel Hill for a master’s in applied epidemiology. She led research on local health issues and global programs including a study in Malawi to test new methods for detecting schistosomiasis.  Virginia Tech News
  • Liv Huselton, a Food Science senior at Virginia Tech, is set to begin her role as a research and development scientist at The Hershey Company. She gained hands-on experience in research and leadership—such as studying abroad in South Africa—that prepared her for a future in product development.  Virginia Tech News
  • Reilly Oare from Virginia Tech was named the College of Engineering Outstanding Master's Student for her work using machine learning to predict stream embeddedness—an important measure for guiding restoration—and help agencies target needed projects. She grew up loving the outdoors and continues to use her passion to support smart environmental management.  Virginia Tech News
  • Virginia Tech’s spring commencement ceremonies begin today on the main campus as thousands of students will graduate during the week. The full ceremony for all students is set for Friday, May 16 at 8:30 a.m. at Lane Stadium — guest ticketing varies by college and a clear bag policy is in place.  WSLS 10
  • Casey Munk, a Virginia Tech senior majoring in biomedical engineering, has combined coding skills with hands-on projects such as NASA and consulting firm internships and work with the football team to build expertise in human performance enhancement—she plans to move to Alexandria after graduation to complete an accelerated master’s in computer science and pursue a career in wearable tech for extreme conditions. Her work focuses on developing tools to help astronauts, military members, and healthcare workers perform better in demanding environments.  Virginia Tech News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Virginia Tech researchers are testing a new catalyst process to produce hydrogen from methane while stopping carbon dioxide emissions—funded by a $1.3 million Appalachian Regional Commission grant, the project aims to also make solid carbon for commercial use and will include a STEM education program for rural schools scheduled for late summer.  Cardinal News
