EDUCATION NEWS

  • Felix (the school mascot) joined Christiansburg Rescue Squad last week to help with vehicle checks, supply refills, and emergency calls at an outdoor concert and hospital visit as Falling Branch Elementary uses his adventures for career lessons; he will next week assist with Virginia Tech graduation support.  News Messenger
  • Mountain Valley Pipeline awarded a $15,000 grant to Eastern Montgomery Elementary School to launch an active-learning initiative with desk bikes — school officials say the funding will boost student focus and wellness during class.  News Messenger
  • Montgomery County schools will offer free breakfast and lunch to summer school students through the Summer Food Service Program; eligible locations will open daily from 9-10 a.m. for breakfast and 12:45-1:45 p.m. Local families can also pick up meal boxes on seven Mondays starting June 22 via Amazon.  News Messenger
  • Students from Blacksburg High and Auburn High recently collaborated on a raku art project where ceramics were fired using an oxygen-reducing process — a creative learning experience that many found unique. They plan a similar session at Blacksburg High in 2027.  News Messenger

  • Virginia Tech wrestling head coach Tony Robie announced a historic $1 million donation from Dave and Heidi Jester from Virginia Beach to support recruiting, staffing, and facilities; the gift includes a matching challenge that will run until May 2027.  News Messenger
  • Junior lacrosse star Charis Krouscas, Blacksburg High School’s record-setting leader in goals and points, recently announced her early commitment to play for the Louisville Cardinals in the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) after forming strong bonds with the team during her recruiting visit.  News Messenger
