  • Local volunteers are organizing the Stamp Out Hunger food drive to help feed neighbors in need. The event will run this week at community centers, giving families the chance to donate food and receive support — a welcome boost for local residents.  WDBJ7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Dominion Energy has proposed two plans to adjust residential bills starting July 1; one will raise the average bill by $22 a month for a year, and another will raise it by about $8 now and $1.80 monthly for 10 years (pending approvals by the state commission and governor action).  Cardinal News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech displayed its new construction safety research on May 7 in Blacksburg, aiming to improve local building practices for workers.  WDBJ7
  • Virginia Tech said Thursday that a Canvas outage affecting final exams is being addressed by its IT team (working with Instructure), while Liberty University is providing course extensions to help students manage the disruption.   • Montgomery County elementary students near the proposed compressor station will soon get desk bikes as Mountain Valley Pipeline awarded a grant to fund pedal-equipped desks + encourage active learning. The program is expected to roll out this school year.  The Roanoke Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Blacksburg-based nonprofit eliminated over $51 million in medical debt for 35,007 residents across Southwest Virginia through its partnership with a New York-based group (Undue Medical Debt). The relief effort ended debt collections and helped improve credit scores for qualifying families.  Cardinal News
