CULTURE NEWS

  • Rhino Sports & Entertainment began preparing in January with a mass hiring to staff Metallica’s M72 World Tour concert at Lane Stadium, planning to use 500 workers for parking, security, ticketing and concession roles. The event is expected to host 70,000 people with parking starting at 1:30 p.m., gates opening at 4 p.m. and the concert beginning at 6 p.m.  WDBJ7
  • Virginia Tech alum Dylan Bomgardner helped design the stage lighting for Metallica's M72 World Tour concert at Virginia Tech on May 7 — his work included updating Group 1440 Inc. products used across national tours. He works as a senior product specialist and continues to refine the lighting designs as the tour moves from city to city — a notable achievement for local talent.  WDBJ7
  • A Virginia Tech alum played a key role in designing Metallica's stage lighting and his work will be featured in the band's upcoming concert— a project that highlights his creative skills.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech graduates face challenges in their job search because a federal hiring freeze extended through July 15 — reducing internships and job opportunities — may affect those planning to work in Northern Virginia, a university spokesperson said.  WSET
  • Glenvar High School student Brooke Smyth was awarded the four-year 30,000-dollar Don Holliday Scholarship on Wednesday for her strong grades, extracurriculars and community service—she is the first Highlander to earn the award since 1995 and plans to attend Virginia Tech.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Service Authority has proposed a new schedule that raises water rates from $14.42 to $16.42 and sewer rates from $10.55 to $11.95 per 1,000 gallons for service from July 1 through June 30. The Authority will hold a public hearing on June 02 at 6:30 p.m. at the Montgomery County Government Center — 755 Roanoke Street, Board Room—to gather citizen comments on these changes.  News Messenger

  • 10 News Anchor John Appicello interviewed sports legend Frank Beamer about how Virginia Tech began playing Metallica’s 'Enter Sandman' during football games—Beamer said he looked forward to the Metallica concert on Wednesday night.  WSLS 10
