COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dr. Patricia Hyer was honored with the 2025 Citizen of the Year Award by the Rotary Club of Christiansburg-Blacksburg at its April meeting—she received the award for her work at Virginia Tech and volunteer efforts that have helped strengthen our local community.  News Messenger
  • Regular registration for summer programming at Blacksburg Parks and Recreation opened May 6 at 9 a.m. and offers three options for sign up: online, by calling 540.443.1100, or by visiting the Parks and Recreation Administration Office, Community Center, or Aquatic Center.  New River Valley News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Former Virginia Tech athletes George Probst '95 and Jeff Holland '95 are attending Metallica's concert at Lane Stadium tonight as part of the band’s M72 World Tour. They purchased VIP packages (which include early entry and watching in the snake pit) and plan to join a production tour (featuring a group photo on stage) after a long history of attending Metallica shows together.  Virginia Tech News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Giovanni Heater, set to graduate from Virginia Tech’s School of Communication in sports media and analytics, credited hands-on experiences in and out of the classroom for preparing him to start his career—he plans to become an every-sport broadcaster after graduation.  Virginia Tech News
  • On May 3, 2025, the Corps of Cadets Pass in Review honored the Class of 2025 and appointed the Class of 2026 as the new cadet commanders. Brig. Gen. Dwayne Edwards and Maj. Gen. William Seely led a formal change of command ceremony—marking a key transition for the regiment.  Virginia Tech News
  • The Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics honored two outstanding seniors from the 2025 graduating class—Michele Mickelwait and Jack Wilson—for their academic success and leadership through internships, fellowships and extracurricular roles. The awards recognize their readiness for future careers in community economic development and commodities trading.  Virginia Tech News
  • Virginia Tech Ph.D. student Md Shadman Sakib has been selected for the 2025 Water Prediction Innovators Summer Institute and will join a national group to work on flood forecasting and water prediction research. He will work in a small interdisciplinary team on a seven-week project that develops new tools for predicting water risks.  Virginia Tech News
  • A team of over 30 Virginia Tech students joined an international contest to design an unmanned aerial rescue vehicle and won $28,500 in funding after rigorous flight tests in February. They returned to Blacksburg to prepare for the next submission deadline in September (aiming to develop a safe, simple, and low-cost aircraft for off-grid rescue operations).  Virginia Tech News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Robyn Fox, the new clinical trials coordinator at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Virginia Tech, leads studies that test new ways to treat pets when standard care fails — the trials follow strict safety reviews and now include options like tumor-targeting ultrasound and early disease detection. The research is funded by a 15 million dollars gift and aims to give pets a chance at innovative care.  Virginia Tech News
