COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local animal welfare group is asking Blacksburg residents to help save abandoned bunnies. The group announced the rescue effort on April 30 — volunteers can sign up to foster the rabbits as details become available.  WDBJ7
  • RAM House is preparing to open its new One Stop to Home facility in town + it will provide streamlined access to essential home services for local residents.  WDBJ7
  • This month, local advocates spotlight Autism Acceptance Month by promoting workforce opportunities and training programs for people with autism. The initiative aims to foster inclusive hiring among Blacksburg businesses.  WDBJ7
  • Blacksburg will host an event honoring mentors where the ACC Coach of the Year will deliver remarks. The celebration of local role models is scheduled soon and more details will be announced.  WDBJ7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dunkin’ will open its new Fairlawn restaurant on May 5 at 5 a.m. with a coupon book raffle for free donuts and a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. featuring a $2,000 donation to Special Olympics, while May 6 will offer 100 days of free coffee to the first 100 guests.  New River Valley News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech student Simba Srivastava identified a meat-eating dinosaur fossil earlier this year (thought to be three times older than T. rex), which marks a notable academic achievement in local research.  WSLS 10

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bryant Orchards reported water shortages due to a long dry spell — staff are adjusting irrigation methods to protect the harvest. The issues were noted on Apr. 30 and are prompting new watering practices to better support the farm.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The House approved H.R. 7567, the Farm, Food, and National Security Act, and sent it to the Senate. Congressman Morgan Griffith said the bill will support Virginia’s farmers and create new research and meat-processing opportunities for local agriculture & rural communities.  New River Valley News
