- ➤ Alpha Mu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority donated needed items + monetary gifts to the Pregnancy Resource Center of NRV in Blacksburg on April 28. Chapter members Doris Caldwell, Sharon Legg and Kristen Talley met with staff members Karen and Mindi. News Messenger
- ➤ The New River Valley Home Builders Association announced winners of its LEGO Home Building Contest today at the Expo at the Christiansburg Rec Center (Booker, Malachi, Jonathan, and Alex Chaney won in age-based categories) with 1,400 people in attendance. News Messenger

- ➤ Carrie Chenery, a Virginia Tech alumna, has been appointed as Virginia’s secretary of commerce and trade by Gov. Spanberger. She leads the state’s economic strategy with a focus on building community partnerships — addressing affordability, energy, and housing challenges. News Messenger

- ➤ Students in Animal Sciences are learning vital lamb care skills at the Copenhaver Sheep Center in morning and afternoon shifts; hands-on work there prepares some for a future professional doctorate program at the Virginia–Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Virginia Tech News
- ➤ DesignUP is a one-day design-a-thon at Virginia Tech that pairs professional designers with student teams to create graphics for local nonprofits and community programs. - ➤ NRCC is offering summer workforce development courses in healthcare, skilled trades, energy and business starting May 26. - ➤ Jonathan Marye of Blacksburg High School was named Montgomery County teacher of the year and Region 6 teacher of the year after five years teaching French. He will now be reviewed by a state committee for Virginia teacher of the year. News Messenger
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Virginia Tech and Radford University received Virginia DEQ grants to reduce campus food waste. Radford got $203k for an in-vessel compost system and VT got $3.53m to build a facility processing 2,700 tons annually—part of nearly $8M awarded to 12 colleges by the EPA program. News Messenger
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ VDOT awarded a $237.75 million contract to Triton Construction Inc. to widen 3.2 miles of I-81 between mile marker 133.8 and exit 137 in Roanoke County and Salem. Construction will begin in spring 2027 — part of a larger nine-mile project to boost safety and capacity. WSET
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Community Health Center of NRV broke ground for a new facility at 135 Akers Farm Rd in Christiansburg and received a $100,000 gift from the Lunch Pail Foundation to build two pediatric medical and two pediatric dental rooms — the center is set to open in early 2027. News Messenger

- ➤ Blacksburg boys extended their unbeaten run with a 2-1 overtime win over Patrick Henry and a 2-0 shutout of Christiansburg (key goals and solid goalkeeping powered the wins). The results, achieved earlier this week, boost their season record. News Messenger
