COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Blacksburg officials from Parks and Recreation held a meeting Monday night to gather public feedback on plans for a new community center that will join the existing facility on Patrick Henry Drive — an online survey remains open for further input. WSLS 10
- ➤ A fundraiser called 'Tea for Justice'—held on April 28th—raised funds for a legal organization that helps residents access legal aid services. The event secured money for the group’s efforts to support community justice. WDBJ7
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Appalachian Power is using funds from its recent rate increase to catch up on tree trimming and vegetation management aimed at reducing outages in our area—spending nearly $8.8 million on trimming and $29.5 million to target problem circuits. The utility will present a detailed cost-benefit analysis of the program at the next rate review. WSLS 10

- ➤ Phillip Forgo-Hess ’10 explained how a guest lecture by Virginia Tech alum Chris Shumaker changed his career from planning for dental school to working in advertising, which led him from Blacksburg to roles at McCann and Powers Creativity — he also advised students to build strong networks and a solid portfolio for success. - ➤ Virginia Tech is restoring SEVIS records for international students and alumni in Optional Practical Training after the federal government reversed the terminations following court challenges—this move will let affected students continue earning degrees and support research and teaching. WDBJ7
- ➤ Virginia Tech faculty and students are using digital tools to rebuild relics from Meketre’s tomb into a virtual reality experience that lets users explore ancient Egypt — the project will be on display at The Cube in Moss Arts Center on May 5. This interdisciplinary work uses 3D printing and digital mapping to create realistic sound effects and interactive elements for an engaging display. Virginia Tech News

- ➤ Gov. Glenn Youngkin ordered U.S. and state flags to be flown at half-staff today for Fentanyl Awareness Day — honoring those affected by fentanyl poisoning. The flags will be lowered at sunrise and stay at half-staff until sunset on all state and local buildings in the Commonwealth. WSLS 10
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Virginia Tech Helmet Lab updated its helmet ratings to include tests for high-speed falls in racing and cross-country events—this new method follows FEI protocols to simulate horizontal impacts. The lab tested 49 helmet models to rate concussion risk and guide consumers in choosing better protection—updated ratings are now available for riders. Virginia Tech News
