  • On April 14, 2026, over 6,000 students, faculty and staff completed nearly 1,200 community service projects across Blacksburg, Christiansburg and the New River Valley, making a noticeable impact on local neighborhoods. EDUCATION NEWS

  • A local nonprofit is launching a program to help girls build self-confidence. The initiative, announced recently, will offer interactive sessions plus mentoring opportunities in Blacksburg.  WDBJ7
  • Virginia Tech held its Day of Remembrance yesterday at campus to honor those affected by past loss. The event featured speeches and moments of silence that brought together students and local residents.  WDBJ7
  • Officials said the planned closure of Stewartsville Elementary has been delayed as the board reviews the school’s future plans. A meeting is set later this week to decide on next steps.  WDBJ7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Over the weekend, AEP crews working on a site near Hollins Road Baptist Church on Old Mountain Road found an osprey nest on a power line and built a new pole (with a perch) to relocate it safely.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new state law will ease building tiny houses in backyards starting next year, offering locals simpler ways to create affordable housing. The rule is expected to fuel creative home projects across the region.  Cardinal News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Virginia health officials expect RSV to continue until April despite low overall respiratory illness, and local data shows moderate RSV activity with high emergency department visits among children under 4+ experts advise improving indoor air quality to lower risk.  WSLS 10
