COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thousands gathered on Blacksburg campus on April 12th for the 3.2-mile Run in Remembrance—an annual event honoring the 32 students and faculty who lost their lives in 2007.  Virginia Tech News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Virginia Tech will hold a celebration honoring late poet Nikki Giovanni this summer at the Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre at Moss Arts Center on Sunday, June 8 at 2 p.m.—the event will feature musical performances, readings, and speeches as part of Alumni Weekend. A documentary titled Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project will be shown on Saturday, June 7 at 3 p.m. with free tickets limited to four per reservation.  WSLS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech residence halls host summer programs that welcome campers, conference attendees, and scholars while the Conference and Guest Services team handles room assignments, dining, and other logistics; around 8,000 guests stayed last summer and the team is inviting sponsors to plan summer 2025 events—ensuring an immersive campus experience.  Virginia Tech News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today Virginia Tech issued a joint message from President Tim Sands and Senior Vice President Dan Sui that explained federal orders have led to funding challenges for the university’s research programs. The message noted that a federal judge barred an NIH cost cap while a DOE cap was imposed, and among 2,315 active awards, 25 were terminated and 12 had stop-work orders, prompting plans to appeal and reassess funding strategies.  Virginia Tech News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute improved a freeze-drying process that preserves exosomes at room temperature for up to a year—this breakthrough uses tryptophan to keep the exosomes from damage and aggregation. The new method will help Tiny Cargo deliver wound-healing medicine to cancer patients, military troops and industrial workers exposed to radiation.  Virginia Tech News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Blacksburg High School Girls beat Salem 3-0 on a cold, rainy night in Blacksburg with goals by Erin Bishop, Piper Berger and Bella Garza while goalie Anna Dove made four key saves to keep the team unbeaten at 7-0. The Blacksburg boys won 3-1 over Salem and Auburn High teams also secured wins in soccer and softball, with Auburn girls scoring four goals and the softball team winning 13-2 over Christiansburg.  News Messenger
