BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local businesses have been recognized and promoted this week—today the update revealed several names and leadership changes among area companies. The announcement outlines key changes that will guide future developments in the local business community.  The Roanoke Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Virginia Tech students will honor the late instrument maker Daniel Foster today with a memorial concert using instruments he built — six belong to the school and six are on loan. The free concert will start at 1 p.m. in room 150 of the Creativity and Innovation District — featuring music by Bach, Popper, and Brahms.  WSLS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Researchers at the CEA Innovation Lab use advanced technology to grow tasty, high-yield crops indoors that may change local food production soon; the lab plans future tests to refine its methods and help growers boost yields.  Virginia Tech News
  • BuildLAB is a campus workshop where any student can work on school and personal projects after finishing online safety training—staff teach them how to use machine and woodworking equipment safely. Supported by the Myers-Lawson School of Construction, the lab offers hands-on learning for building projects that help students prepare for future careers.  Virginia Tech News
  • At Virginia Tech, students joined the IDPro program to work on real world projects in industry, research, and service learning starting April 11th. The program gives students mentorship, resources, and opportunities to build their professional skills (IDPro stands for interdisciplinary projects).  Virginia Tech News
  • International student Ibrahim Tahmid came to Virginia Tech from Dhaka for his Ph.D. in computer science and built a strong community through his work with the Association for Bangladeshi Students and Cranwell International Center—he now helps empower other Hokies. His project Home Beyond Home is a community-driven photography exhibit at the YMCA Community Gallery from April 4-19 that connects international students with local culture.  Virginia Tech News
