CULTURE NEWS

  • A Blacksburg woman will be featured on Jeopardy (Monday, April 14) as she appears on the nationally televised quiz show (showcasing her local talent).  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech quantum experts Sophia Economou, Charles Cao and Wayne Scales will explain what quantum means and how quantum computers work in celebration of World Quantum Day on April 14.  Virginia Tech News
  • Virginia Tech discovered that visas were revoked for nine international community members—four undergraduates, three graduate students and two alumni—which has left the campus in shock. School officials said they will help the affected students while they investigate why the revocations occurred.  WSET
  • Researchers from Virginia Tech found the largest virus in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a discovery published in Science. Their study shows that the virus can lie dormant and later reactivate — a fact that may lead to new gene editing techniques.  Virginia Tech News
  • Seven international students and two alumni at Virginia Tech had their visas revoked this week when their Student and Exchange Visitor Information Records were terminated (forcing them to leave the US immediately). The university will hold an online information session on April 18 (to answer questions and help affected families) as officials work to support its international community.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Office of Elections in Christiansburg will offer in-person early voting from May 2 to June 13, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. except on May 26 when the office is closed for the holiday; voter registration ends on May 27, absentee ballots must be applied for by mail by 5:00 p.m. on June 6, and a ballot drop box will be available until the dual primary on June 17.  News Messenger

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia Tech Competitive Cheer traveled from Blacksburg to Daytona Beach to compete in the NCA College Nationals—after placing 4th in prelims on Friday, the team finished 5th in the Intermediate All Girl Division I-A finals on Saturday at 7:27 p.m.  WDBJ7
