COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Virginia Tech will hold the 2025 Day of Remembrance on Saturday to honor the lives lost on April 16, 2007+ thousands of community members will join a 3.2-mile run around campus landmarks+ those unable to attend in person may participate virtually.  WSLS 10
  • The Heritage Apiary Outreach Program will educate Blacksburg residents on honeybee protection by hosting expert-led sessions + hands-on demonstrations. The initiative will guide local efforts to conserve bee populations + support community agriculture.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Caroline Blom, a sophomore majoring in English literature and professional and technical writing at Virginia Tech, won first place and $1,500 for her poem 'How to Get a Happy Life' at the Giovanni-Steger Poetry Prize ceremony on April 2 (the first since Nikki Giovanni passed away last year) held at Lyric Theatre.  Virginia Tech News
  • Virginia Tech's annual DesignUP event kicked off on April 9th when graphic design professionals and students spent a full day creating logos, pamphlets, and websites for local nonprofits in Blacksburg—giving students valuable client experience.  Virginia Tech News
  • Stephen J. Skripak has been named Professor of Practice Emeritus of Management at Virginia Tech. He served over 15 years at Pamplin College of Business teaching business strategy and consulting + led dual-degree programs, study abroad initiatives and co-authored an open-source textbook downloaded nearly 3 million times.  Virginia Tech News
  • Reed B. Kennedy has been named Associate Professor of Practice Emeritus of Management at Virginia Tech by the Pamplin College of Business, where he served for over a decade leading global education programs and coordinating large capstone courses. He also co-authored an open-source strategic management textbook downloaded over 500,000 times — a testament to his impact on student learning.  Virginia Tech News
  • Virginia Tech President Timothy Sands said on Thursday that three undergraduate students, four graduate students and two alumni had their SEVIS records terminated, meaning they must leave the U.S. immediately—he added that the school is asking the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security for more details.  WSLS 10
  • Virginia Tech landscape architecture students and community representatives spent five days in a charrette to design inclusive trails at Pocahontas State Park. The nine student teams developed plans featuring sensory stations and accessible boardwalks—details that will guide the next stage as the Friends of Pocahontas State Park hires a landscape architecture firm.  Virginia Tech News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Virginia Tech researchers studied hantavirus in rodents using NSF data and identified 15 species carrying the virus, including six newly recognized hosts. Their findings will help public health officials predict outbreaks and adjust surveillance plans for future risks.  Virginia Tech News
