  • The Freedom to Give donation drive continues in Blacksburg after launching on Apr. 8. Local organizations are accepting contributions at designated drop-off points (check locally for details) as community members support those in need.  WDBJ7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Virginia Tech’s expert and Appalachian Power spokesperson say proposed data centers will strain the local grid since one center can consume energy equal to a college town, so upgrades like the Valley Link Project are underway to secure reliable power for our community.  WSLS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech announced high marks from U.S. News and QS on Wednesday, as its College of Engineering earned nine top-25 spots and its veterinary program ranked at No. 18 nationally, with QS listing its engineering and tech programs at No. 112 globally.  WSLS 10
  • The newly launched BRICCS Lab gives local faculty and graduate students hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment in neuromorphic computing + AI chip design; the facility opened on April 7.  Virginia Tech News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • APCo announces a plan to upgrade 18 miles of aging transmission lines in Pulaski, Montgomery and Floyd counties to boost electric service; it will submit the proposal to the SCC this summer+ details will be mailed to property owners before construction begins in fall 2029.  WDBJ7

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • A Pet Talk article (published Apr. 8) asks if dog parks suit every dog's needs. It highlights local owners’ input on park design and safety, urging Blacksburg pet owners to consider what features can best serve their dogs in these shared spaces.  WDBJ7
