CULTURE NEWS

  • Sue Bell, the great-great granddaughter of Confederate General Gabriel Wharton, has donated over 1,000 Civil War documents including 500 love letters between Wharton and his wife to Virginia Tech’s Special Collections and University Archives to preserve local history.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two veterinary students from Chile’s Universidad Austral spent three months at Virginia Tech, where they researched dog ear infections and cancer to test new treatments plus learn hands-on skills for future studies. Their work aimed to improve diagnosis and treatment methods while strengthening global ties between the universities.  Virginia Tech News
  • On March 29 during Virginia Tech’s Civil War Weekend, Sue Heth Bell donated over 1,000 Civil War documents — including 500 letters exchanged between General Gabriel C. Wharton and his wife — to Virginia Tech’s Special Collections, linking the region’s past to today’s research needs. The university will catalog and digitize the letters so that scholars, students, and the public can learn from the historical records.  News Messenger

  • Scientists at Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC found that during fear tests, male and female mouse pairs stayed in sync while same-sex pairs often fell out of step — the study may offer clues for understanding social behavior under stress and help inform strategies for anxiety and stress regulation.  Virginia Tech News
  • Virginia Tech neuroscientists at Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC will capture real-time brain signals that guide food choices using advanced electrochemistry and a four-year ($2.75M) grant. The study will measure signals when people drink sugary drinks (with patients who have implanted leads) to help design better treatments for obesity.  Virginia Tech News
  • The USDA announced on Saturday that more than 22,000 pounds of Johnsonville cheddar bratwurst was recalled after two consumer complaints found hard plastic in the sealed tray packages containing five pieces. Consumers in Virginia and other states are urged to discard or return the product if it is in their freezers or refrigerators.  WDBJ7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia Tech School of Communication students will serve as play-by-play broadcasters this summer for teams like the Salem Red Sox and the St. Cloud Rox as they gain real-world experience from their academic training. The program, which started in 2019, builds pipelines that connect college talent with professional opportunities in baseball broadcasting—offering a rare chance for hands-on learning.  Virginia Tech News
  • Virginia Tech's wrestling team earned top ACC honors as Caleb Henson and coach Tony Robie were recognized, Brennan Rigsby transferred to Radford for his final season, and the men's golf team placed third at the Testudo Cup—Friends of Claytor Lake removed 4,785 tons of debris after Hurricane Helene and will resume cleanup next spring.  News Messenger
  • Auburn High School baseball improved its record to 8–0 with a 6–1 win over Grayson County while Blacksburg girls and boys soccer won 4–1 against Patrick Henry and William Fleming respectively. In other local sports, Auburn boys soccer shut out Floyd 2–0 and Concord University baseball swept Davis & Elkins in two games—advancing to ninth in the Regional Poll.  News Messenger
