COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors voted on March 25 to cancel planning and funding for the Student Life Village project—which was meant to provide over 5,000 beds—and community members expressed concern over ongoing housing shortages. In the past decade, over 5,400 beds have been added yet many local students still find it difficult to secure off-campus housing.  Collegiate Times

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Choolaah Indian Barbecue opened on March 17th at Hokie Grill in Owen’s Hall and offers wraps, bowls, street food–inspired sides and Indian inspired drinks. The restaurant uses premium ingredients (chicken, paneer, vegetable croquette and tofu) and quickly attracted long lines and many repeat customers.  Collegiate Times
  • Paul Denardo—CEO and chairman of National Bankshares and The National Bank of Blacksburg—will retire as CEO effective June 30.  The Roanoke Times

  • ABC13 won multiple awards at the Virginias Associated Press Broadcasters Awards on April 5th, 2024—Mark Spain earned Best TV News Anchor and the AP Robert Gallimore Distinguished Service Award while his team also received honors for spot news, reporting, and weathercasting.  WSET

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Slate Creek Builders in Blacksburg won a Silver Award in the Best in American Living Awards by the National Association of Home Builders at the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas in February for its nice backyard makeover — with a pool house, a bar, and a sauna— and the firm said it was happy with its team and clients.  New River Valley News
