COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today a Blacksburg nonprofit hosts BUZZ Live! at 7 p.m. at Church on Main to raise funds for Hope to Walk’s mission in Ukraine providing prosthetic legs, and the event is free with a livestream option — the group will travel in May with Ukraine Focus to fit 20 amputees at an estimated cost of $15,000.  WSLS 10

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sinclair Broadcast Group became the first media company to use Virginia Tech MAAP’s FAA-approved method for flying drones over people for news gathering in late February. The new system lets reporters capture aerial views while maintaining safety—trained pilots follow strict standards.  Virginia Tech News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Moss Arts Center will host the 2025 faculty triennial art exhibition Assembly, which will open with a free reception on April 10 from 4-6 p.m. in the center's Grand Lobby (190 Alumni Mall) and will remain on view until April 26.  Virginia Tech News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech's Hybrid Electric Vehicle Team is competing in the EcoCAR EV Challenge, a four-year contest sponsored by MathWorks, General Motors, and the U.S. Department of Energy. The team is redesigning a 2023 Cadillac Lyriq's propulsion systems, Level 2 autonomous features, and electric powertrain—providing hands-on learning for their future careers.  Virginia Tech News
  • On Tuesday morning, interim commandant Brig. Gen. Dwayne Edwards turned over control of the Corps of Cadets at Upper Quad to U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. William Seely III (the first Marine two-star general to lead the corps), who will serve as the top military officer at Virginia Tech. A formal change of command ceremony is set for May 3 at 10 a.m. (open to the public) to honor the leadership shift.  Virginia Tech News
  • Virginia Tech civil and environmental engineering students dominated the 2025 ASCE Student Symposium at WVU Tech by winning first place in surveying, sustainability, technical paper, concrete canoe and steel bridge events; they now will compete at national championships in May and June.  Virginia Tech News
  • On April 1, Virginia Tech led transformative research in semiconductor technology, wireless, artificial intelligence, quantum, natural resources, and agriculture. Faculty and students are working with industry + government to create solutions in health and security.  Virginia Tech News
