COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Town of Blacksburg is seeking community input to shape its future brand by partnering with Arnett Muldrow & Associates to capture the local spirit. The survey is available on Let’s Talk Blacksburg and will close Friday, May 1.  New River Valley News
  • Shelor Chevrolet partnered with Montgomery County Parks and Recreation to donate baseball and softball equipment for the upcoming season; they also contributed $500 for a test drive event and made another $500 donation to support the Chevy Youth Baseball and Softball Program (photo courtesy of Shelor Motor Mile).  News Messenger

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New River Community College offers four free summer camps for local middle and high school students; registration opens today. The camps—covering engineering, forensic science, trial practice and public safety—will be held in Dublin and Christiansburg on various dates throughout summer.  News Messenger

  • Jenia Molotkova from VTCSOM worked with biomedical engineering students at Virginia Tech to test Lymphavibe, a device that helps cancer patients reduce pain in their upper arms at home. She received a Medical Student Research Symposium Letter of Distinction on Mar. 25.  Virginia Tech News

  • Evan Baker enjoyed a giant slice at Bennie’s in Blacksburg plus snapped a photo next to a 12 foot skeleton in Christiansburg. His 2026 quest to eat pizza on stranger’s lawns has reached stops in eight states and he plans to keep his unique adventure going.  News Messenger

  • Boating incidents at Claytor Lake dropped to five in 2025 with no fatalities, and college sports saw Hokie swimmers post top-25 finishes, Highlander pitcher Raymond Ladd earn Starting Pitcher of the Week honors, and former coach Jeff Kinney return as associate head coach for men’s soccer, boosting team strength.  News Messenger
