COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Radford Noon Rotary Club and Glencoe Mansion launched the Field of Honor flags on sale today to honor local heroes—military members, first responders, teachers, and cancer survivors. The flags will be on display from Memorial Day, May 26 to Sept. 11, cost $50 with available sponsorship options, and proceeds will support local Rotary projects—such as scholarships and community services.  New River Valley News

  • A man was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash on March 30th—he was taken to a hospital as police investigated the incident.  WDBJ7

  • Local businesses in Blacksburg recognized key employees with awards and promotions during the week of March 30, 2025. The changes affected several companies and marked shifts in leadership in the area.  The Roanoke Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday afternoon, Carter Roberts, a senior and member of the Institute of Creativity, Art, and Technology, presented his culminating work of music and digital media projects at the Creativity and Innovation Living Learning Building in Blacksburg. He displayed a range of genre-spanning pieces—he mentioned plans to pursue media scoring after his spring graduation.  Collegiate Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On March 25, Virginia Tech students protested on campus near Burruss Hall and Torgersen Hall to oppose the Board of Visitors decision to remove DEI—an action they said would leave marginalized students unrepresented. Professors, staff, and community members gathered to show their disagreement and express concern that the change would affect classes.  Collegiate Times
  • Virginia Tech Recreational Sports center is hosting Hokie Movement week from March 27 to April 3 — the event offers free group exercise classes and activities such as horseback riding lessons, golf clinics and a bouldering wall day for students, faculty and staff. A celebration on April 4 will conclude the week to recognize all participants.  Collegiate Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new state law, HB 1904 — signed this month and set to go into effect July 1 — lets nurse midwives help care for newborns when no doctor is available to ease rural maternity shortages. Many hospitals may resist this shift by keeping strict rules on midwife practice.  Cardinal News
