COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The New River Valley Leading Lights extended the nomination deadline for its volunteer awards to Friday, March 28 + winners will be honored at a banquet on April 29 and receive donations for the non-profit of their choice.  WSLS 10
  • With only 10 days left before the Girl Scout Cookie program ends on Sunday, March 31, local buyers can support Girl Scouts — whose cookie sales help military, nurses, first responders, and teachers in the community.  WSLS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech is recommending a $295 increase in intercollegiate athletic fees for the 2025-26 school year to cover rising costs and support revenue sharing with student-athletes—this change will be discussed at Tuesday’s board of visitors meeting.  The Roanoke Times
  • Virginia Tech professor Wayne Scales (a space scientist) is working to boost African American representation in STEM, where they make up only about 9% of the workforce. He works with HBCUs (colleges serving Black students) and leads projects that include bringing a space weather radar facility to Africa.  WDBJ7

  • On Friday morning, First Alert Hometown Weather published an update at 4:04 a.m. that noted three active weather alerts and revised forecasts for local conditions—details that kept residents informed.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on April 14 at 7:15 p.m. at the County Government Center at 755 Roanoke St. in Christiansburg to get citizen comments on Fotheringay, LLC’s request to amend the Comprehensive Plan for about 633.72 acres near Route 11/460—changing the property designation from Resource Stewardship to Village Expansion with 307.72 acres as Open Space and 326 acres for Medium-Density Residential housing.  News Messenger
  • Town leaders in Blacksburg are worried because Virginia Tech has changed its plan to build on-campus student housing, which could worsen the town's housing shortage. Vice Mayor Michael Sutphin said the Board of Visitors will vote on the resolution on March 25—local talks to address housing issues may end if the vote passes.  WDBJ7
