ECONOMY NEWS

  • BadCredit.org ranked Blacksburg as the second most affordable college town for March Madness by comparing living costs and game-day expenses across 60 cities+the study shows local fans can enjoy the NCAA tournament with less financial strain.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Town of Blacksburg has launched the downtown façade improvement program Blacksburg Spark to offer matching grants up to $20,000 for business and property owners to enhance storefronts. Applications open immediately and will be accepted on an order received basis until May 1 (applications must be submitted through OpenGov).  New River Valley News
  • The Western Virginia Water Authority is planning policy changes after locals raised concerns about water use for a proposed Google data center in Botetourt County. Officials will review drought plans & consider new pricing tiers for high-demand users over the next six months.  WSLS 10
  • The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office announced it will name Chief Deputy Robert Page as chief on April 1, replacing retiring Sheriff Hank Partin. Page, who has served since 2013, led the Criminal Warrants Division & worked with the U.S. Marshals Service & is set to continue the office’s mission.  WSLS 10

  • A Virginia Tech professor notes that filling out an NCAA bracket remains nearly impossible as changes like NIL deals + the transfer portal make game outcomes hard to predict, and fans may think twice before forecasting major upsets during March Madness.  WSLS 10
