COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Earth Fest, a new celebration of local agriculture and sustainability, will be held on April 25 in Christiansburg and will feature a 5k starting at 11 a.m., live 4-H activities, a farmers' market, and a performance by Travis Reigh at 5 p.m. (Register for the 5k by April 10.)  New River Valley News
  • The LOA is now offering transportation services and Meals on Wheels volunteer positions to help local seniors access meals and maintain mobility. Enrollment is open now (contact LOA for further details).  WDBJ7
  • 7@four announced its Heroes Project Wednesday, Mar. 18, to highlight local heroes and celebrate everyday contributions in Blacksburg. Details on the project are expected to be shared soon (including scheduled events and participant selections).  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former Hokie athlete Chrystal Starling now works as director of youth development and assistant principal at Urban Dove Team Charter School in NYC, where she uses her sports career to empower underserved students; she advises current Tech students to use campus resources to build their voices.  Virginia Tech News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Warner commented on the decision to close the Yokohama facility on Mar. 18 (remarks made at a local forum), noting that the change could affect local jobs and urging a review of support measures. Officials are expected to announce further transition plans soon.  WDBJ7

  • A local support group offers help to residents facing the emotional challenges of downsizing. The group meets at a Blacksburg community center to provide guidance and a space to share experiences.  WDBJ7
