EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Virginia Tech President Tim Sands marked the 20th anniversary of the Principles of Community adopted on March 14, 2005+ he said the guidelines help guide the school’s growth and learning. Virginia Tech News
- ➤ Virginia Tech will open its 25th Graduate Education Week on March 24th with six days of activities that celebrate more than 7,000 graduate students and highlight their research in Blacksburg and the greater Washington, D.C. area. A public research symposium on March 26th at the Graduate Life Center — a key event — will join a faculty and staff award reception and cookouts later in the week. Virginia Tech News
- ➤ Construction started on a sustainable Solar Decathlon design as professor Joseph Wheeler M.A. '95 and students from Architecture, Arts and Design and Engineering built on floor trusses designed with guidance from Van Metre’s Director of Design and Estimating, Darek Jadlowski '10—further work is planned to complete the project. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Virginia State Police warns everyone to plan safe rides and use a designated driver during St. Patrick's Day celebrations as drunk driving can lead to jail+ fines and other penalties. The state police will join a Crash Awareness program from 12:01 a.m. March 15 until midnight March 17, 2025+ urging careful driving on local roads. WSLS 10
- ➤ Blacksburg joined with Christiansburg, Montgomery County, New River Valley Regional Commission & Virginia Tech to create a roadmap for the region’s future. The collaboration will tackle local challenges and opportunities and guide efforts to improve quality of life. Virginia Tech News
- ➤ Virginia Tech researchers are collecting and analyzing data from Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project — the largest offshore wind project in the nation — to develop methods that protect wind farms from cyberattacks. Virginia Tech News
- ➤ Blacksburg Police Chief Todd Brewster will retire in July after serving the town for over 30 years—he began as a volunteer and advanced through many roles before becoming chief. The town is now recruiting his replacement while he looks forward to spending more time with his family. New River Valley News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Virginia Tech infectious disease expert Lisa M. Lee said measles is spreading as fewer people get their shots — the disease can severely hurt children and others — and she urged parents and local health leaders to boost vaccinations to at least 95% to stop the outbreak. Virginia Tech News
