  • YMCA at Virginia Tech invites community members to celebrate Pi Day with the 5th Try Y’s Pi event on Mar. 14, where tickets will provide a sampler of five locally made pie slices from participating bakeries + a chance to win prizes that support local youth programs.  News Messenger

  • Today, broadband leadership changed as Tamarah Holmes was promoted to lead Housing and Community Development and Chandler Vaughan was named acting director; Chip Bobbert began as director at the Roanoke Blacksburg Innovation Alliance while Fralin Biomedical’s Brain School starts Monday and AI Decoded is March 12 + mark tech progress.  Cardinal News

CULTURE NEWS

  • YMCA at Virginia Tech announced the Exploring Art in the NRV exhibition, running through Friday, Apr. 10 at the Y Community Art Gallery on N. Main St. in Blacksburg. A reception is set for Sunday, Mar. 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. + guests can meet participating artists.  News Messenger

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools proposed a new FY26-27 budget with a 12% increase that raises spending from $153.6M to $165.7M and adds funding for more staff + substitute pay + student meal programs; the board and supervisors will review the proposal at a joint meeting later this month.  News Messenger
  • The Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute offers an Intensive English Program for spouses of students and staff that helps build language skills and community in Blacksburg; the training prepares participants for future career goals.  Virginia Tech News
  • Montgomery County School Board members said a $4.5M gap during the Christiansburg High School renovation caught them off guard. The board is now reviewing changes & plans to manage the overrun.  The Roanoke Times
  • Montgomery County Public Schools revised its weapons policy at a Tuesday meeting to clarify weapon classifications and update discipline measures, including short suspensions, long suspensions & expulsion hearings. The changes aim to remind students and parents what items are not allowed at school.  WDBJ7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Carhartt donated $50,000 on Tuesday to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation to expand volunteer, training, and equipment programs that support preservation and education efforts. The company also announced a spring release of a themed t-shirt line featuring national park designs.  WSLS 10
