EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Tech researchers in Blacksburg used vehicle sensors and journals (tracking 14,700 trips between 2021 and 2023) to study how cannabis affects driving behavior. The study found that drivers altered routes and saw cannabis-related trip spikes during lunch and evening, with findings released in a 2025 report.  WSLS 10
  • Virginia Tech is replacing HokieSPA with a new cloud-based platform called My Virginia Tech to improve service for students & staff. The change begins May 21 at 5 p.m. and continues until May 26 at 8 a.m., with an information session on March 3 for faculty.  Collegiate Times
  • The Montgomery County School Board will vote Tuesday, March 3 on a policy that mandates 365-day expulsions for students carrying weapons and changes school start times for more instruction. It will also consider funding for safety fixes + free breakfasts at the county government center in Christiansburg.  Cardinal News

  • Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services asked residents to report invasive species sightings after National Invasive Species Awareness Week. Residents are urged to submit details online + by phone to help protect the commonwealth.  WSLS 10
