COMMUNITY NEWS

  • YMCA at Virginia Tech will host its 5th Try Y’s Pi event on March 14, offering a five-slice pie sampler from local bakeries. Ticket holders will receive an email on March 13 (with pick-up and voting details) to support local food entrepreneurs and community programs.  New River Valley News

  • Patchwork 250 is a new series that invites locals to share unique community history as Virginia marks its 250th anniversary. Submit your story using the Pin It option or form to add your chapter to our ongoing narrative (details provided online).  WSLS 10
  • The Grandin Theatre Foundation is celebrating Women’s History Month in Blacksburg by hosting special performances that honor local women’s contributions, with events scheduled throughout the month.  WDBJ7
  • The YMCA at Virginia Tech is hosting the Exploring Art in the NRV exhibition from Monday, March 2 to Friday, April 10 at the Y Community Art Gallery on 1000 N. Main Street. The event also includes a reception on Sunday, March 15 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. with refreshments.  New River Valley News

  • Afghan refugees shared their personal journeys with VT students at Virginia Tech (in Blacksburg) on Friday, Feb. 27. The session offered firsthand insight and sparked questions about resettlement challenges.  WDBJ7

  • Governor Abigail Spanberger issued a proclamation on Friday, Feb. 27 recognizing February as the 100th anniversary of Black History Month, honoring Dr. Carter G. Woodson’s legacy and celebrating the contributions of Black Virginians.  New River Valley News
  • Electric Rd. will have a lane closure from Feb. 27 to Mar. 3 — VDOT advises drivers to take alternate routes.  WDBJ7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hometown Health is launching early preparations for spring allergies by reviewing treatment protocols + ensuring sufficient medication stocks so local residents can better manage symptoms when pollen levels rise later this season.  WDBJ7
  • After retiring from a decade of service at Oakey’s Funeral Services—where he provided comfort to many—therapy dog Ragnar was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma and treated with surgery and chemotherapy at the Animal Cancer Care and Research Center. Now in remission, he is expected to enjoy another year with his community.  WSLS 10
  • Local allergists advise starting daily nasal sprays and antihistamines now to lessen spring allergy symptoms. Dr. Rohit Katial explains that tree allergies will show early while grass allergies may not hit until late April (for those affected).  WDBJ7
