- ➤ A neighbor rescued an opossum found nearly frozen on a carport and full of funk, then took it inside to warm up. The Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center will care for the animal until warmer weather lets it go back into the wild. WSLS 10
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Local station WDBJ+ unveiled its new special 'Grown Here at Home' on Friday, Feb. 20, showcasing stories from around town. The channel expects the program to draw community interest as it airs this week. WDBJ7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Alumni, students, faculty and friends rallied during a 24‑hour Giving Day event at Virginia Tech on Tuesday, Feb. 19 to support campus initiatives. The drive thanked Hokie Nation for its strong community backing. Virginia Tech News
- ➤ GO TEC launched a new career lab with a ribbon cutting at Christiansburg Middle School on February 20, 2026. The program, funded by a $1 million grant, will expand hands-on career-connected learning to schools in Giles, Pulaski, Radford, and Roanoke. New River Valley News
- ➤ The 2026 NRV Child Care Summit, hosted by Virginia Tech and the Community Foundation, will offer strategies to support and grow the local childcare workforce with insights from panelists and speakers. Registration closes on February 25. New River Valley News

- ➤ The House passed a bill to honor Radford's Colonel John Ripley by awarding him the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroism at Dong Ha Bridge during the Vietnam War. The measure recognizes his decades of service and ties to Virginia. New River Valley News
- ➤ Blacksburg Transit plans to expand service to Mt Tabor and Woodbine and invites community members to share ideas at a public input open house Tuesday, Feb. 24 (5pm to 8pm) at the Blacksburg Community Center.
