Virginia Tech researchers found that the Chesapeake Bay Region — a zone of economic, historical, and ecological value — is sinking with measurements showing rates up to 3 millimeters per year as data from the 1970s is compared to recent readings.

The study attributes the subsidence to factors such as groundwater withdrawal and tectonic shifts.
