COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After a winter storm on Jan. 30, local residents stepped outside as neighbors and businesses worked to clear ice and snow from sidewalks and roads. One local man plowed driveways in exchange for donations + body shops and towing services are busy fixing vehicles affected by the storm.  WDBJ7
  • Today, Meals on Wheels resumed deliveries after heavy winter weather forced a pause, with volunteers & local partners adjusting routes and providing extra frozen meals for seniors as conditions remain unpredictable.  WDBJ7
  • Appalachian Power is preparing crews for high winds this weekend that may damage local power lines + the company urges residents to prepare emergency kits and check on elderly neighbors.  WSLS 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lingering ice has caused disruptions, but locals in the ABC13 viewing area have built creative igloos, forts and even an ice tree. Residents are invited to share photos or videos of their winter creations with Chime In.  WSET
  • 5 Points Music Sanctuary (a local venue) will celebrate its ninth anniversary with planned events showcasing local music. The celebration will begin soon, giving fans an opportunity to enjoy live performances.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Over the past 48 hours, Virginia hospitals treated 3,436 people for ice-related falls, including about 500 in the local area. Health officials advise walking carefully — using de-icing compounds and proper footwear as more winter weather is expected.  WDBJ7
  • Healing Strides of Virginia is ensuring its 28 therapy horses are prepped for a winter storm by providing extra blankets and warm shelters—helping the nonprofit continue its community care work.  WSLS 10
