ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy's survey reported that average gasoline prices in Virginia increased by 0.5 cent per gallon on Monday, reaching $2.69/g. The report noted that prices were 10.3 cents lower than last month and 25.3 cents lower than last year.  WSET

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Registration is open for a 13-week apartment maintenance technician training program at New River Community College in partnership with NAAEI & VAMA. The course begins February 4 and provides lab and classroom instruction to prepare students for the CAMT Certification Exam, with special pricing for Virginia residents.  New River Valley News
  • New River Community College will offer Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training on Fridays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. beginning January 23 in Christiansburg. The 16-week course requires participants to have three years of industry experience and a job-related, sponsor-approved project (using DMAIC methodology).  New River Valley News
  • Virginia became the first state to join the Education Freedom Tax Credit on Jan.1 when Governor Youngkin announced a scheme that gives up to $1,700 in tax credits to fund K-12 scholarships through eight approved organizations; funding will be available starting Jan.1, 2027 + the move expands school choice.  New River Valley News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Blacksburg Transit set a new record last year with over 4.7 million passengers and a 26% ridership jump, ranking as the third fastest growing transit agency in the country. The service will reduce weekday trips next Monday due to electric bus battery recalls (peak hours will remain active).  WDBJ7
  • Blacksburg Transit reported a rider surge after new schedule adjustments + route improvements were made yesterday. Officials say the updates better serve local transit users.  WDBJ7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Recent Hometown Health bulletins reported rising flu numbers in southwest Virginia, a YMCA LEAN Program teaching fitness and nutrition, and a new law for extra baby food testing, with updates released between Jan. 7 and Jan. 9.  WDBJ7
